The magic of paint!

Paint can do a lot for a home. When we are showing property to buyers it's the first thing they object to. "omg, why did they paint the dining room dark red?" It can be a major turn off. Luckily, paint is a pretty simple fix. Not to mention as far as prepping to sell without breaking the bank, its very wallet friendly. Whether you are listing to sell or just ready to update the look.
Here are our favorite ways paint can work for you.

  • Updating your cabinetry. When we moved into our current house, it was one of the first things I did. We chose granite tops but we weren't sure what we wanted for bases, so I just painted them. It's amazing how different it looks when you go from the contractor wood finish with a modern gray.

  • The front door. When you live inside it or barely use it, you probably don't think about it much. The front door is one of the first things people look at when they see your house. Color, windows, wreath and door mat. The front door is your homes handshake. Pick a color that complements the style or even the area. We changed from a sharp orange to a maritime turquoise and added a crab knocker

  •  Brick fireplaces and wood surrounds. The focal point of the living area in most homes is the fireplace. Old brick is easy enough to update with paint, most people go the route of a white wash. White paint simply diluted with water to allow the texture and some color to come through. Those wood surrounds can also have a new personality with the right shade of color. We painted ours the week we moved in and added a top portion to add interest and height to the room. I pulled colors from the marble inlay so gray on the wall and a soft white for the wood surround.

  • Furniture and decor.  I love giving something a new identity and that extends to the decor and furnishings within the home. Mirror frame, vases, chairs and hutches. Something from an antique store or yard sale can look like a piece from Pottery Barn with the right paint. This sideboard was $100 at a salvage store. A can of paint and some new hardware and it's one of my favorite pieces in the house.
